Rug Reminder
Feature: Horse and Pony Magazine  August 2009
A cooler rug is used to help a horse or pony cool down after exercise, without the risk of taking chill.

Tech speak
Cooler rugs, like this one from Elizabeth Greenwood by IV Horse, should use the latest fabric technology.

This Pink Bling cooler rug is made from a fabric with a special spiral rib weave, so it fi ts close to the body but still lets the horse move around easily. The wicking action of the material draws sweat away from the skin so the horse cools down quickly.

Wear when?
Cooler rugs should be used after exercise, especially if a horse or pony has got sweaty and is prone to taking chill. They are also useful for travelling when the stress of being on the move can make a horse or pony sweat. As you can see the Pink Bling cooler has a matching tail guard and would certainly add eye-catching detail to a pony’s travel gear - check out the gold thread in the rug’s weave!
